Planning a visit or vacation to the neighborhood this season? Ballard is an excellent spot to check out some of Seattle’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and Old Ballard’s historic brick industrial buildings that now feature a number of Seattle’s best restaurants, bars, and breweries. In addition to being one of the best spots in the city for foodies and craft beer-lovers, there are some fun springtime events in Ballard to mark on your calendar...
The Ballard Jazz Festival
The annual Ballard Jazz Festival is a cultural highlight that you do not want to miss. From May 11th through 14th, the 14th Annual Ballard Jazz Festival will feature world-class jazz musicians. The event has grown exponentially since its inception in 2003, as a single night Jazz Walk between six clubs. Today, the four-day festival highlights dozens of artists to more than 2,000 attendees at the Nordic Heritage Museum and the Leif Erickson Hall and other neighborhood spots. The Ballard Jazz Walk is on Friday, May 13th, starting at 6:30 p.m. This is the most recognizable event of the festival, since the walk was its initial format. Saturday kicks off with a Swedish Pancake Jazz Brunch, followed by a full day of Jazz and culminating with the Mainstage Concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Museum, featuring the Mike Stern Group and Hal Galper Trio. Weekly Ballard Farmers Market
Lucky for us, the Ballard Farmers Market is held year-round, rain or shine! While other neighborhoods’ markets are only open seasonally, ours is each and every Sunday, no matter what (exception: Christmas and New Year’s Day, if they fall on a Sunday). Last year, the market celebrated its 15th anniversary, and continues to offer fresh, locally-grown produce, handmade food products and gifts, beautiful floral arrangements, and so much more. Now that we’re well into spring, the market’s bounty has expanded and there is lots of new stuff to find each week!
17th of May Celebration (a.k.a. Syttende Mai)
Celebrate Norway’s Constitution Day this year with our neighborhood’s annual 17th of May Celebration! Ballard’s Scandinavian culture is very rich and active, and this is one more event to highlight our heritage. There will be a parade of marching bands, drill teams, classic cars, Norwegian-American lodges, and more! The Nordic Heritage Museum is offering free admission all day, the Leif Erickson Lodge is hosting a traditional Norwegian lunch for $30/person, and entertainment at Bergen Place from 2 - 5 p.m. Click here for the complete event lineup.
Ballard Brewshed Pub Crawl
The Third Annual Ballard Brewshed Pub Crawl is coming up on May 19th. Starting at Reuben’s Brews at 5 p.m., the pub crawl continues at 6:30 p.m. to Peddler Brewing Company and finally to The Bergschrund (NW Peaks) at 7:30 p.m. Your ticket ($15) includes discounts for beer, games and free swag. You must wear green to participate! All proceeds benefit Washington Wild and the Brewshed Alliance.
